The Red & Blacks travelled to South Wiltshire for the Wiltshire Senior Cup at Wick Lane to face Downton FC. Manager, Andy Crabtree had to put out a somewhat different team due to player availability. This meant there were two notable changes, with midfielder Stewart Lisowski having to play in goal and striker James Vincent at right back.
The Robins are currently top of Division 1 of the Wessex League and with 39 goals scored it was always going to be a difficult contest, compounded with the changes. The final score was 3 – 2 to the home side.
Downton went ahead early in the game after Lisowski fumbled a shot which fell to Owen who made no mistake in getting the ball into the net in the 5th minute. Downton definitely had the better play in the first half. In the 39th minute, Warminster created their own problems in the 6-yard box making it easy for Razax to double Downton’s lead.
The second half saw Warminster much more lively and exert more pressure on the home side. The Red & Blacks got off to a flying start, less than 3 minutes into the half, when Francois Allan fired home from the left after Downton failed to clear the ball from a Harry Barnes free-kick.
Unfortunately, the home side scored their third goal (57) when a free-kick deflected off the wall, was tapped into the path of Savage 16 yards out, who fired low into Lisowski’s left and despite a good effort to reach it the ball passed between keeper and post. For much of the rest of the game, Downton seemed to be hanging on and Warminster saw Lewis Graham pull one back in the 61st minute. Graham was still forward having been tackled during a run through the length of the pitch. Downton cleared the ball but it was driven back to Graham who ran across goal and fired in low from the right and into the left corner of the goal.
Downton managed to hold on for the win and move into the next round of this cup. Were it not for mistakes made the result would have been in Warminster’s favour.
