Having won 5 – 0 earlier in the week at Longwell Green Sports, Warminster Town were full of confidence travelling to Keynsham Town on Saturday, March 9th to meet the promotion contenders currently lying in second place in the league. Keynsham at home is always going to be a difficult side to beat as they have the advantage of playing on their 3G plastic pitch.

Throughout the match, it was obvious that the pitch was an advantage and the home side demonstrated good passing moves from one side of the pitch to the other and neat moves between players close to each other. The visitors though defended doggedly and restricted the goal scoring opportunities for Keynsham. However, the home side did prevail and went on to win 1 -0.

Warminster did create some early opportunities to score and Connor McKay and George Butler had chances in the first 15 minutes. In the next couple of minutes, Keynsham went close, firstly with a header that went just wide of the post and the second a terrific strike which hit the crossbar and out for a goal kick.

The teams went into the dressing rooms at half time goalless with neither side able to convert their chances into goals. Warminster got off to a bright start in the second half and in the 49th minute, a cross from McKay from the right in the 6-yard box went across goal with unfortunately no one to convert. Over the next few minutes, Keynsham had opportunities which were wasted to keep the score at 0 – 0.

In the 71st minute, Warminster went closest to a goal when Eben Mortimer-Taylor had his shot cleared off the line. Both sides continued to battle and Warminster was showing how they had improved over the past few months and could match such a top team. With 6 minutes of normal time remaining the deadlock was broken when Keynsham’s Matt Longy sent in a low cross from their right along the byline and tapped home at the near post by Steff Lee to put the home side ahead.

Warminster did not let the goal deflate them and in additional time created a couple of chances with a long-range shot from Lewis Graham, saved by the keeper and Mortimer-Taylor who fired over the bar. Overall it could be said that Keynsham just edged the visitors but a Warminster could certainly be pleased that they had prevented any more goals and given a good account of themselves.
