Following an exhilarating performance against Sherborne Town, Warminster made their first trip to a new team in the league, Tytherington Rocks. Could the Red & Blacks come away with all 3 points from this trip to Gloucestershire? Indeed they could. An incredible four penalties in the first half sealed a 4 – 0 victory for Warminster.
The home side was unable to cope with the runs down the left by Conner McKay. Finding his way into the box, he was brought down three times in similar areas and earned the first three penalties. The first came in the ninth minute, the next one in the 14th and the third in the 17th. Ian Jeffery, Warminster’s captain, sending all three into the left side of the net.
On the half-hour, the Rocks had a great opportunity to pull one back but could only watch the ball roll along the front of the visitors’ goal mouth.
A couple of minutes later, McKay was brought down again, just outside of the penalty area. Mortimer-Taylor stepped up to take and forced a fine save by the keeper’s left upright.
With 3 minutes to go, Gardener one on one with the keeper shot and struck the left-hand post, a fine effort.
Warminster’s 4th penalty came in the 43rd minute, when the Rocks’ keeper, Johnson, clattered into Mortimer-Taylor. Once again, Jeffery stepped up and fired home into the right side of the net this time.
The second half started, and within 45 seconds, Seviour found himself in space on the right struck the ball well, but his shot went just over the bar. Moments later, McKay too went close, forcing the keeper into making a save.
At the 60 minute mark, Tytherington missed a golden opportunity to score. Thompson came out of his goal to meet the attacker, who sent the ball just wide of the left post. A couple of minutes later, Gardener shot and forced a save, the parried ball reaching the feet of Mortimer-Taylor, who shot wide with an almost open goal. The ball didn’t seem to go in the back of the net from open play!
A few other opportunities came Warminster’s way, but with four goals in the bag, it didn’t matter today that they wouldn’t go into the net. Another entertaining game of football for the fans and a well-earned 3 points.
