Warminster Town 1 – Hengrove Athletic 2

Suggested Title: Chances Galore For Warminster

On yet another glorious September afternoon Warminster faced the new team in Division 1, Hengrove Athletic who were relegated from the Premier Division last season. They have had to rebuild their team and despite getting off to a very shaky start have improved much in their last few games. Today was no exception and they played well as a team, finding space and creating chances, two of which turned into goals. Final score Warminster Town 1 – Hengrove Athletic 2.

It looked as though the home side would win this game with the early show of form, Walton forcing the keeper into a good save after just 18 seconds! This was followed by more chances but despite the run of play, Hengrove opened the scoring right on 12 minutes with a goal from a corner scored by Mickey Parsons.

Warminster went close in the 22nd minute when James Vincent headed into the ground which bounced over the bar and 4 minutes later he also headed again over the bar a ball from a corner. Walton and Barnes also had shots on goal but nothing went into the visitors’ goal. In the 37th minute, Churchyard tried to chip the keeper but it was an easy save. Miluk went really close with 2 minutes left of this half with a ball which flew just over the crossbar.

Warminster were giving Hengrove too much space which allowed them a number of chances and no doubt the halftime team talk would try and address this. The second half got under-way and Warminster did create several early chances which on another day would have gone in. Warminster had a series of early corners with the keeper being kept very busy. Following one of those corners in the 57th minute, a long hopeful clearance by Hengrove went over the head of defender Harry Barnes standing on the halfway line, leaving number 10 Regan Burton to run onto the ball with only Nathan Ball to beat. Burton kept calm and slotted the ball into the back of the net.

Warminster pulled one back in the 68th-minute when a through ball from Shanley found Vincent who made no mistake and fired home.

The second half was full of incidents and saw Henry Mcferran substituted with Ashton Shanley following an accidental clashing of heads with an Hengrove player. Shanley was later sin-binned for 10 minutes on 80 minutes for dissent, he was allowed back on the field for the last 2 minutes of additional time. During the last couple of minutes of normal time, a bad tackle was made on Lewis Graham, the resulting melee saw a red card for the offending player as well as Graham for his reaction.

Right to the end, Warminster continued to try to get something from the game and continued to go very close to scoring especially when substitute, Francois Allen almost converted Jack Miluk’s cross from the right just in front of goal. It was a disappointing result for The Town after putting in so much effort and with the number of chances in front of goal.

The next game is away at Sherborne Town on Saturday, September 28th and the next home game is a late 7.45 pm kickoff on Saturday, October 5th. as part of Ground-Hopper Day.
