Warminster Town 1 Lebeq Utd 1 (Pens 3-2)

On Wednesday, March 9th, Warminster Town welcomed Lebeq Utd to Weymouth Street for the first round proper of the Les Phillips Cup. Following their 17 match unbeaten run ending at AEK Boco, the home side were looking to make amends. This game finished with a penalty shoot-out, and Warminster successfully made it to the next round.

Lebeq took the early advantage in the 13th minute with a close-range header beating Thomson in Warminster’s goal. There were few on-target shots for either side in this half. Warminster started the first period of the half in a sloppy manner. However, as the half progressed, there was much improvement in the passing and accuracy.

Courtesy of James Vincent, Warminster levelled the score in the 42nd minute. Vincent shot from within the box, blasting the ball into the roof of the net. The teams went in for halftime at 1-1.

Ths second half saw few chances for both sides, and Vincent failed to get a brace with a golden opportunity to make it 2-1 when he lifted the ball over the bar from close range.

Late in the match, Jordan De-Silva received a red card when running across the path of a Lebeq player.

The game seemed to have a draw written all over it, and it remained at 1-1 when the final whistle blew. With no extra time in this cup competition, the match concluded with a penalty shoot-out.

The home side went first, and Cockerill stepped up and scored his. Lebeq’s first penalty flew over the crossbar.
The game required six penalties each, and it was Pinder and Gardner who made sure of the win by adding two more. Final score 3-2 on penalties.
