On very frosty Wednesday night, Warminster Town hosted a team who have been much fancied as title contenders, Cheddar AFC. This was a match which the visitors must have gone away very disappointed having created so many chances in the first half which they failed to convert. The final score was a 3 – 1 win to The Town.
Warminster scored the opening goal in the 7th minute. Jack Miluk beating the back 4 crosses from the right and finds Francois Allen in space in front of the goal. Allen made sure by blasting the ball high into the roof of the net. The Cheesemen were not overawed by this goal and shortly after play restarted had sight on goal and it was not long before Carl Crabtree had to pull off a wonderful save using his left leg to prevent an equaliser. It looked certain that the Cheddar player would have scored from that position.
Cheddar continued to take shots at goal and amazingly did not put any into the back of Warminster’s net. At the very end of normal time, Warminster doubled their tally. The Cheddar keeper, Tom Creedy made a save and the rebound failed to be cleared by the visitors’ defence giving the opportunity for James Vincent to tap in.
The second half resumed with Warminster restricting Cheddar to fewer chances. There was a flashpoint early in this half which resulted in a yellow card for Warminster’s striker, Francois Allen. Fairly soon afterwards he was substituted for Martin Johnson. Cheddar tried to change the game by using all 3 substitutes, 2 of them before Warminster made it 3 – 0 with another Vincent goal in the 75th minute. Vincent’s left-foot shot on the edge of the box shot low into the left corner beating the diving Creedy.
Crabtree produced a fine double save with 10 minutes to go. This resulted in a throw-in for the Cheesemen and the long-throw was bundled in by Callum Laird. This was all too late for Cheddar and Warminster because of taking hold of their chances came away with all 3 points.
