Following a 3-week break due to Covid-19 in the team, Warminster Town resumed winning ways on Saturday. The enforced break seemed to have taken its toll on the home side. Especially in the first half, Warminster were not at their best, and the visitors, Longwell Green Sports, looked more likely to score. The game was settled by a single goal, with a late penalty for Warminster.
The early chances fell to Longwell Green with a shot in the 14th minute producing a fine save from Thomson. An excellent opportunity on 32 minutes presented itself to the visitors when a ball flashed across the 6-yard box with 2 two players unable to connect with it.
Warminster did create some chances, firstly Gardner (23) and Bartley (28), with a long-range shot going wide of the post. On 30 minutes, Miluk was through on goal but fired well over the bar.
Longwell went close again (39) with a long-range shot that went just over the bar at the Weymouth Street end. In the 42nd minute, Thomson, diving to his right, stretched his hand to divert the ball past the post. Another close call in the first half.
The second half saw the opportunities to score for Longwell reduced, and thanks to Thomson in the 59th, prevented the ball from crossing the line. Gardner did well (70) down the left and created space to shoot but saw his effort go into the side netting.
In the 79th minute, Longwell’s number 9 created space around Jeffrey and left-footed the ball over the bar. A shot, no doubt he would have expected to get on target.
The only goal came in the 80th minute when Jack Miluk running into the right-hand edge of the penalty area, was met by the keeper and brought down. Up stepped the ever-reliable Ian Jeffery to shoot low into the left of the goal with the keeper going the wrong way.
