Wells City 1 Warminster Town 3

Title: A Hard Fought Win

Monday is an unusual day for Western League football but a good crowd of away fans travelled with Warminster Town to Wells. Their efforts did not go unrewarded as the visitors produced a strong performance against Wells City, and won the match 1-3.

Wells started at a high tempo and Warminster had to defend from a number of free kicks which Wells won close to Warminster’s 18 yard box. The home side looked dangerous and it took great effort from the Red and Blacks to keep them from scoring.

The first goal came in the 25th minute and it was Warminster’s Martin Johnson who tucked the ball home. A shot from Sisson was blocked and the rebound fell for Johnson to give the visitors the lead. Barnes went close a few minutes later, his free kick hit the wall then the rebound back into the wall and the third attempt hit the post.

This was a good period for The Town and on 33 minutes Johnson produced a superb cross from the left which was met by the head of Joel Sisson to double the lead. In the final minute of normal time, Wells were awarded a free kick inside Warminster’s half. Hotine saved it, but the rebound and scramble inside the goal mouth saw the ball popped into the back of the net. Halftime: Wells City 1  Warminster Town 2.

Warminster battled hard and from the kickoff in the second half saw them start to assert more pressure on the home side. Several early chances were created but the scoreline remained the same. Wells brought on all 3 substitutes to try to get back level but this probably opened them up to Warminster’s attacks. A terrific move from Sisson saw him breaking through the middle of City’s defence. Sisson passed the ball to Allen, who calmly slotted the ball home, and making it 3 goals (66).

Less than 10 minutes later saw Allen sin-binned for 10 minutes, however not long afterwards, Wells lost a player through injury and they too were down to 10 men. Allen came back on with 5 minutes of normal time remaining and should have made it a brace. Right at the end Warminster had another opportunity, which somehow flashed wide of the City goal.

A very hard fought game of football and a good test for Warminster as they climb the table to 4th place.
