Sunday afternoon saw Warminster Town Ladies travel to a windswept Wiltshire FA Headquarters at Green Lane, Devizes for the Wiltshire FA Women’s Cup final against Swindon Town Women.
The game was originally to take place at Melksham Town’s ground, but after the inclement weather during the previous week taking its toll on the pitch and Melksham Town playing at home the day before, it was decided to switch venues to the Wiltshire FAs artificial 3G pitch instead.
The Ladies sporting their very sleek new away kit shot out of the starting gates and took the lead after just 1 minute! A ball down the right hand side to Maddy Brown was smothered by the Swindon keeper, but only pushed out to Shannon Redhouse who’s first effort was also blocked before finally putting the rebound in the back of the net.
The third minute saw Warminster double their advantage. A swindon attack fizzling out and Shannon Redhouse again pouncing the loose ball, putting a lovely weighted pass to Maddy Brown who was clean through, slotting home past the advancing Dani Hull in the Swindon goal.
A significant Cup upset looked possible!
Swindon however seemed to recover from their shell shock and started showing their higher league status and managed to square up the score in the 14th minute. After Swindon got their heads in the game, the floodgates began to open, and the first half finished with Swindon 7-2 up.
With an uphill battle in the second half and weather conditions deteriorating saw Swindon press home their advantage, netting another 4 to bring the final score to 11-2.
It is a rather flattering score for Swindon though, as the girls dug deep and never gave up and with how much harder they had to work to get to the final than Swindon ever did, that makes them bigger winners in my book! The people of Warminster should be very proud of them!
